I thought about it, but don't think there would be any difference between the opposing sides battle boards, might be a bit boring.

Send a pm to Dickie - he has done up some boards, I think, and certainly painted up some lovely Perry figures as warbands. I'm trying to resist the temptation.

I would be very interested in seeing some boards on this. I think that there could be enough differences to make things interesting. One way of doing this is to allow some added interest by using "hired swords". Most Wars of the Roses retinues used a reasonable number of "professionals" for hire. There could be other variances using national groupings with welsh/scottish/irish troops etc. However the biggest way to make things different would be by giving different battle boards by social staus. A royal "prince" would have some specific options but would have a very small, very well equipped band. A major nobleman also would have a smaller and well equipped band. A lesser nobleman more cheaper troops etc. I think this would give variety and interest but haven't put any "flesh on the bones" yet.

My biggest concern is how to reflect the power of the longbow without it being all-powerful.

More ideas and thoughts please.

The Longbow was perceived as being less powerful in the WotR, as both side's Longbows countered the others! They are a magnificent weapon, and in the HYW were battle winners. I have done some Battle Boards for the HYW. I'll link the post to here!

In large scale battles there is this perception of the longbow's effect in the Wars of the Roses. However at a skirmish level using Saga levels of figures I worry that it would still be too effective.

I guess the only way to find out is to playtest!

I'm still doing research on the WotR, as it is not a war that I know so much about... As it pertains to battle boards, it may be that there are 2 sets of Factions: Royal Army and Usurper's Army. They can be either Yorkist or Lancastrian, but it seems that the Army of those in power contained mostly "English" troops, and the Army of the one contesting power had many Mercenaries. The other option could be to "localise" the Factions: Say, Welsh Borderers (Western, Longbow heavy), Scots Borderers (Northern, Pike heavy), Southern/Central English, or Mercenaries.

Thoughts?
