Jomsviking - Northern Tempest

Jomsviking - Northern Tempest

Postby MarkB » Sun Apr 29, 2012 10:26 pm

Just had my first encounter with Jomsvikings. We played the Clash of Warlords scenario & I used Anglo Saxons. Simple question, do the figures removed by the Northern Tempest count towards VPs? In the scenario VPs are kills, under this ability the figures are "removed".

We have played that they do, which means I lost. Basically my opponent used Northern Tempest every turn. I kept his wrath down until I ran out of levy, then decided to increase his Wrath, which after a couple of turns he used to beat me up. Not that I'm bitter..........

Good fun, just wanted to get clarification

Any figure removed from the table counts as a casualty unless otherwise noted. So Northern Tempest models count, as would any Viking model removed as part of the Valhalla ability.

Alex - thanks for the clarification, that is how we played it.

There was only one bit of the deleted mail trail I did not agree with. That was concerning how hard it is to get Northern Tempest, a normal distribution on 6 SAGA dice & you would get the option of playing it each turn.

I agree that you have to get into the Jomsvikings asap. In our game he deployed in one corner with the plan of massing an attack on one end of my line. what transpired was that when he realised he could get 1 VP a go at no risk, he did that & advanced slowly in a strong position. Cue Anglo Saxons going across the board to try to get him to fight. I went first & after my 7th & last go had a 1 VP lead, but he had a turn to go & a wrath of 6. He then rolled & could have played Northern Tempest & won the game by using that. He actually loaded his abilities onto attacking a unit of warriors I had in a building. I lost 6 he lost 1.

In a 7 turn scenario this ability could get you 21 figures, against most compositions that will be 7.5VP (12 levy 9 warriors). My very tentative conclusion is that Jomsvikings will use this to get a VP lead whilst strengthening their position. A tough challenge when you have an army without additional shooting abilities & no mounted to get at him quickly.

Maybe I was unlucky only to get the combination once after about 6 turns.
On a normal size table the enemy will get into contact on turn 2 even if the Joms are trying to play hard to get.
Most other 2 dice abilities are worth 3 figures (Norman/Breton/Welsh shooting re-rolls, for instance).
It's also just about the only Jomsviking ability which they can use to force the opponent to raise their Wrath (sometimes the cancel ability does it, too).
Our experience is that the enemy just takes off levy the first few times it is used; that uses up 4 turns, plenty of time to get stuck in.
When you try and use it on Warriors, they say no, and then the Joms get angry.
But by then it is turn 5 and the Joms haven't been able to use most of their good abilities, in particular they will have had no activation pool without Wrath.

Joms are an interesting faction - quite different to play with or against, but I don't think they are over-powered.
I think Welsh are the closest to over-powered, but maybe that's just the way we play :-)
