Skraeling Warband

Postby Harold Bluetooth » Sat Aug 18, 2012 3:15 am

I decided to do a Skraeling warband, as it is very different in style to my Normans, and it allowed me to paint something different from the norm, as most Dark Ages troops essentially look the same.
I used the Gripping Beast starter set, which is okay in variety of poses, except for the Levy.
I decided to use an autumn woodlands theme, with contrasting colours (red, white and black), with the focus on the warpaint.
I used the Army Painter black basecoat spray, and their paints and base materials as well. Only the leaves are Secret Weapon.
I believe it worked pretty well, with the skin tone done by using a tan colour, then a brown wash over the top.

Unfortunately, they haven't done so well, fulfilling the tradition of a newly painted warband always losing.
I lost by 1 point in Sacred Ground, 1 cart in Escort (we had time restrictions), and 1 building in Homeland, in our tournament!
However, I did win the best painted warband, with some good prizes provided from War and Peace Games.

Please do criticise, as I have not been painting or wargaming for more than about 6 months. Any tips or hints?
Now, onto the figures:

Warlord (aka Tom the Hawk):

Levy (only white warpaint):

With the prizes I won, I am going to end another project I had recently started. I am going to create Egil Skalagrimsson and his band, and two warlords for the Jomsvikings, using the age of ravens figure, two points of jomsviking hearthguard, the gb egil figure for dane axe and the normal warlord, making a 'winter in iceland' theme.
Thanks in advance.

Excellent paint job. Definitely like the detail on those bases as well. Well done.

They are very good. I like the base details, were did you get the leaves from?

I got them from Secret Weapon Miniatures, via War and Peace Games here in Australia. Secret Weapon does lots of other stuff for bases, as well.

They look great, and even better 'in the flesh'. Well deserved prize for best painted warband.
