Army List -Late Sengoku Period

Postby sepoy1857 » Mon Jan 16, 2012 7:27 am

Just came up with this list last night based on my reading (mostly Turnbull, but also the Samurai Archives Forum). The Mounted samurai and attendants come from the figures for the Li Clan at Osaka, and the Specialist Teppo unit are from the records for the Matsura Clan around the same time. I'm trying to figure out how to best to represent authentic period units within the framework of SAGA. This is based on the assumption that Ashigaru of this time period would be classed as Warriors. All samurai are classed as Hearthguard. Hope it makes sense...comments and questions always welcome.

Warlord & Personal Banners

Mounted Samurai & Attendants:
2 Mounted Samurai = 1/2 point
2 Foot Samurai = 1/2 point
4 Foot Samurai = 1 point
8 Ashigaru = 1 point - 6 Ashigaru with long yari (1 Ashigaru NCO + 1 Nobori Bearer)
Specialist Units:
8 Ashigaru = 1 point - 6 Teppo Ashigaru + 1 Bow Ashigaru + 1 NCO
Total = 4 points
and
8 Ashigaru = 1 point - 6 Teppo Ashigaru + 1 bow Ashigaru + 1 NCO
8 Ashigaru = 1 point - 6 Ashigaru with long yari (1 NCO + 1 Nobori Bearer)
Total = 6 points

Well...here are some pictures to show what I mean. They come mostly from out-of-print Japanese books. Hopefully these help to illustrate what I mean in terms of the mounted samurai and attendants especially; I don't think there is really a Western equivalent to this formation which makes things more difficult. As always questions and comments are welcome and encouraged!

Are you saying there was a system like the French Ordonance system in Medieval times?

I would think nagware-yari and pike combined units would be available for some clans?

Hi!

I'm not sure as I don't know anything about medieval French armies. But it seems from reading Turnbulls works that yes there was a system of sorts in Sengoku Japan. I'm not sure if it was a clan buy Clan thing or if it was done by certain armies as a whole like Tokugawa or Toyotomi. I just don't know. I have a lot of Japanese books on the subject...but sadly I don't read Japanese. I guess I need a Geisha to translate them for me...

I am extremely interested in this. I had a converted system using Legends for skirmishing this era that got a fair amount of play, and I have lots of minis and terrain. I see a saga con game in the future.

Any thoughts on combined teppo/nagae-yari formation benefit rules?

I''m not really sure but the author is interested in covering Japan at some point; I think I'll leave it to them to work out...it's hurting my brain trying to figure out how it should work. There aren't any direct equivalents to Western troops or tactics so it's likely to be almost completely different I would guess.

Most are from OOP Japanese language books on the Sengoku Jidai. Two are from one of Turnbull's (can't think of the name right now, but I can get back to you with it).

UPDATE:
The last picture is from Stephen Turnbull's "Samurai Warfare"; an excellent book and highly recommended.
